0124_5426_PENDUL_BDEF

Probably Italian, Empire period, circa 1810-1815

Height28 cm Width12,7 cm

Entirely made of finely chased gilt and patinated bronze, these candlesticks, modelled as tripods or “atheniennes”, present a very unusual neoclassical design. The three straight legs adorned with interlace friezes are joined by a ring highlighted by a frieze of small leaves, terminating above in female masks and below in feet. The whole supports a patinated bronze basin with pinecone decoration, surmounted by a candleholder adorned with finely chased flowers, waves, and foliage; it in turn supports a drip tray. The sloping triangular bases feature a central star and a stylised frieze.
