Clockmaker

The clockmaker Mathieu is known primarily for the exceptional pieces he presented at the Exposition des produits de l’Industrie française in 1834, whose remarkable execution and ingenious mechanisms drew the attention of the jury and of horological connoisseurs. In his Musée industriel, M. de Moléon discusses the prize-winning exhibitors in 1834, mentioning that Mathieu is the creator of “… pendulum clocks in which the compensation is not obtained by adjusting the bob, but rather by means of two additional mobile weights placed on a lever; thus, the relationship between adjustment and dilatation may be directly and pragmatically determined…”. At the 1834 Exhibition, Mathieu’s innovations were rewarded by a bronze medal.
