Jean-Baptiste Pigalle

Sculptor

(1714 - 1785)

Famous French sculptor, born into a family of cabinetmakers, Pigalle studied sculpture under Robert Le Lorrain and Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne. His work shows a blend of influences, from both the Baroque and neoclassical currents. He was considered a master by his peers. In 1803, two decades after his death, his name was given to the Paris street where he had his workshop, as well as to the square at the end of that street.
